Rooney understands injury stance

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could have played weeks ago but understands manager Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to delay his return to action.

Rooney broke a metatarsal for the third time in three years against Reading in August but is set to face Sporting in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old told MUTV: "I've been dying to play and I let the manager know I thought I was ready.

"He and the physios have been cautious. Rightly so because of the long season."

Rooney also denied that his boots had anything to do with his injury problems.

"I know several ex-professionals have been saying it's down to my boots but they don't know what the boots are like," he insisted. "The boots are fine."
