1949: "How refreshing to see the interest taken in this competition; it was a joke less than five years ago."

No it wasn't. Sorry, it just wasn't.
1947: Tomasz Kuszczak drops a cross from the Derby right, but referee Phil Dowd rules he was impeded.
1947: "Got a feeling the Championship side will sneak a win tonight in front of the manager-to-be. Good luck to them!"
James, Huddersfield, via text on 81111
1945: We are big time under way at Pride Park.
1943: My gaffer tonight, Westy, has fired over a few facts for our consumption: Derby have won only two of their last seven games, while United are unbeaten in 14. Also, these two have only ever met once before in this competition, in the fifth round in 1969. It finished 0-0 at the Baseball Ground and United won the replay 1-0. The managers? Brian Clough and Sir Matt Busby.
1941: The teams are out. There is actually an important game on tonight, and it kicks off very shortly.
1940: "It takes on a different significance, this competition, when you get to the semi-final. You hope the younger boys will do well and they have. As for Nigel Clough, it's good timing from Derby to get him in, but we're Manchester United and shouldn't be bothered by that. Nigel did a fabulous job at Burton and the time has come, he's stepped up at the right time."
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson
1938: "Is everybody forgetting that Derby were United's bogey team for years?"

1936: "We need to get a smile on the players faces and get them winning again. It's been a difficult 18 months for the club."
Derby County manager Nigel Clough
1933: "Just arrived at Pride Park... looking forward to seeing Nigel manage the side, but just heard Carlos Tevez is playing up front for United. Looks like a strong side... yikes!"
Dave, in a very chilly Pride Park, via text on 81111
1930: Stevo's difficult-not-to-annoy-fans-of-both-teams Predo:
Derby 1-3 Man Utd
1928: In a week in which he is reported to have angered Fergie by claiming he would "love" to play for Real Madrid, Carlos Tevez returns to Manchester United's starting line-up, replacing Dimitar Berbatov. Tomasz Kuszczak, Rafael da Silva, Paul Scholes and Darron Gibson are also included, while Cristiano Ronaldo is among the substitutes. Derby's academy manager David Lowe makes three changes with Paul Connolly returning from injury to captain the side while Andy Todd and Mile Sterjovski are also restored.
1925: Nigel Clough will not be in charge tonight, but he will be presented to the Derby fans before kick-off. The Rams haven't been in a domestic cup semi since 1976, but Cloughie has - he won this tournament twice as a Forest player, in 1989 and 1990. I wonder if he gave the players any advice, he did say he'd pop into the dressing-room before the start.
1921: DERBY COUNTY v MANCHESTER UNITED LINE-UPS
Derby: Carroll, Connolly, Todd, Nyatanga, Camara, Sterjovski, Green, Addison, Commons, Hulse, Davies.
Subs: Bywater, Savage, Teale, Barazite, Dickinson, Powell, Hines.

Subs: Amos, Ronaldo, Rooney, Giggs, Carrick, Fletcher, Possebon.
Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffordshire).
1918: "Come on Derby, we are gonna win 2-0!! Show Clough what we can do!!"
Matt from Derby, via text on 81111
1915: "This is going to be our best season ever. I've lost count of how many trophies we're going to win. I think it's six!"

Most annoying post ever? Oh, and he's a United fan, by the way, not Derby. You probably knew that.
1911: You know, I've a feeling a few of you will want to get in touch tonight, I don't know why. Here's how: Text on the magical 81111, and get yourself involved with the gang on 606. I await your baiting with, er, bated breath. Fair game, I think they call it. Oh, and if you're at Pride Park, your text scores double.

1907: He may be the name on everyone's lips, but young Nigel (will it always be so?) will have to wait to make his impact on Derby County. For tonight the Rams are led by academy boss David Lowe as they welcome world champions Manchester United to Pride Park for the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final.
1904: As a football lover with a vested interest in the family, it is an absolute delight to welcome the Clough name back to the big time of our sport. Nigel Clough is a gentleman of the game, a man who has always gone about his business with pride, focus and endeavour, and few who have come into contact with him would ever wish him anything but success. I spent my formative years watching Clough play up front for Nottingham Forest and a finer professional it would be hard to think of. Derby's gamble could turn out to be a very, very shrewd one.
1900: Tonight is a very, very special night for the people of Derby. Forty-two years ago, aged 32, a certain Brian Clough breezed into the Baseball Ground and changed the face of the club forever. He hauled the Rams out of the old Second Division, remarkably led them to their first league title in 1972 and then the semi-finals of the European Cup a year later, before quitting amid controversy in October 1973.
This evening, at their Pride Park stadium, Derby's loyal following will be introduced to their new manager - Brian's son, Nigel. Once again, there is a Clough in residence - and how the locals will revel in his arrival.
Clough takes over as Derby boss
