Sela and Levy celebrate Israel's superb start in Tel Aviv

Israel are on the verge of qualifying for a historic semi-final place after their Davis Cup team secured a surprise 2-0 lead over Russia in Tel Aviv.

One more win will see Israel's male tennis players become the first team from their country to reach the semi-finals of a major sporting event.

Harel Levy, the world number 210, made a mockery of the rankings to beat world number 24 Igor Andreev 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2.

Dudi Sela then beat Mikhail Youzhny 3-6 6-1 6-0 7-5 in front of 10,500 fans.

"They played amazingly well," said Israel captain Eyal Ran.

The tie resumes on Saturday with Israel hoping to clinch victory with doubles duo Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich against Marat Safin and either Youzhny or doubles specialist Igor Kunitsyn.

In Ostrava in the Czech Republic, Juan Martin Del Potro cruised past Ivo Minar in straight sets to haul Argentina level at 1-1 with the Czechs in their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final.

The Czechs had taken the lead in the tie when world number 20 Tomas Berdych overcame Juan Monaco 6-4 2-6 2-6 6-3 6-2 after three hours and 27 minutes.

But Del Potro quickly pulled Argentina level taking an hour and 43 minutes to beat Minar 6-1 6-3 6-3.

Spain, missing the injured Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, had Fernando Verdasco to thank for putting them in front against Germany, although the world number nine had to come back from 2-1 down against Davis Cup newcomer Andreas Beck.

In sweltering conditions on the clay at the bull ring in Marbella, an efficient Philipp Kohlschreiber then brushed aside Tommy Robredo in straight sets to make it 1-1.

The winner of the Spain-Germany tie will play Israel or Russia for a place in the final with the US or Croatia taking on Argentina or the Czech Republic.
