Garcia to miss out on Ryder Cup

European captain Colin Montgomerie is unlikely to pick Spaniard Sergio Garcia as one of his wildcard picks ahead of the 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales.

Montgomerie has three wildcard selections available to him for October's competition at Celtic Manor.

Garcia, 30, is woefully short of form and will take a two-month break after this week's US PGA Championship.

Asked whether Garcia was likely to make the team, Montgomerie replied: "At this stage, it is not looking likely, no."

Four players will automatically qualify via the Ryder Cup world points list and five through the European points list.

Garcia has been an inspirational figure for Europe at the last five Ryder Cups but looks set to miss out on selection for the first time in his professional career.

The Spaniard, who has not won in nearly two years, has played in every Ryder Cup since he was a 19-year-old at Brookline in 1999.

He has a career record of 14-6-4 in the Ryder Cup, and has never lost a foursomes match, but has played in only 17 tournaments this year.

Garcia intends to return to golf at the end of October at the Castellon Masters on his home course in Spain, with November's Australian Masters the only other tournament he plans to play in 2010.

Montgomerie was relieved to switch focus from his own game to the Ryder Cup after struggling through two rounds at the US PGA Championship.

The Scot carded a dismal 11-over-par 83 in the weather-delayed second round on Friday and swiftly turned his thoughts to monitoring the progress of his fellow European players over the weekend.

"It has been a very long two days, a very long week unfortunately," said Montgomerie after sliding to the bottom of the leaderboard at Whistling Straits with an 18-over total of 162.

"I'm looking forward to getting the Ryder Cup team picked, and it's good to see a few [players] are doing well [here]."

Montgomerie will select the three wildcard picks to round out his 12-man Ryder Cup team after the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles on 29 August.
