Poulter rallied to finish well after a disastrous start

Ian Poulter recovered from a double-bogey six at the 10th hole to end the first round of the FedEx Cup in Chicago only two shots off the pace.

Having begun at the ninth hole Poulter salvaged his round with an eagle and six birdies to finish on five under, two adrift of leader Matt Kuchar.

Tiger Woods carded a two-over 73, with Phil Mickelson one shot better off.

But the world's top two had a better day than Rory McIlroy, whose 76 left him joint 64th out of 70.

Poulter did well to hold his nerve after such a poor start.

At the 386-yard 10th, he found himself in the bunker after two shots, then overshot the green and missed a four-foot putt.

"It was a bit of a kick in the teeth," he said.

"I needed more than 10 seconds and was glad it was a long walk from the green to the 11th tee.

"I calmed down pretty quickly and turned a poor mindset into a good one."
