Aston Villa's delay in appointing former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier as their new manager is due to fears of a player backlash over the potential demotion of caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald. Houllier wants Phil Thompson, the man he worked alongside at Anfield, as his number two. However, the Villa squad are keen that MacDonald retains some role in first-team affairs.
