Benayoun set for lengthy absence

Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun

Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun faces several months sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury, according to the Israeli Football Association.

Israel captain Benayoun, 30, has been out with a calf strain but went on international duty for Euro 2012 qualifiers against Croatia and Greece.

However, a scan has now shown he has a tear to his Achilles tendon.

"An additional test will reveal what needs to be done," Benayoun told the Israeli FA website.

Benayoun scored a hat-trick against Malta and also played in the goalless draw against Georgia in his country's two Euro 2012 qualifiers so far.
