England lose Jagielka to injury

Phil Jagielka in action against Switzerland
Jagielka shone in England's last two matches

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has been ruled out of England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro with a hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old missed a training game at Arsenal's London Colney complex on Friday after experiencing some tightness in his hamstring beforehand.

He then underwent a scan which confirmed he would not be fit in time for Tuesday's match at Wembley.

Gary Cahill of Bolton Wanderers has been called up as his replacement.

After two towering central defensive performances in last month's victories over Bulgaria and Switzerland, Jagielka had been expected to retain his place next week as England look to maintain their 100% record.

It would have left England manager Capello needing to choose between Rio Ferdinand and John Terry as Jagielka's partner, but that selection dilemma would now appear to have been resolved.

Meanwhile, Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry joined up with the squad on Friday evening after being given additional time at home because of personal reasons.
