Ulster ran in four tries to open their Heineken Cup campaign with a bonus point win over Italian club Aironi.

The province were just 11-6 up at the interval thanks to Andrew Trimble's try and two Ruan Pienaar penalties.

Ian Humphreys pounced for a second try, punishing Aironi's blunder in trying to usher the ball over the dead ball line.

Some good Ulster passing set Simon Danielli up for the third try before Pienaar burst through to complete the job and bag the fifth Pool Four point.

Although they achieved what was expected in terms of the victory and bonus point, Brian McLaughlin's men will know they will have to perform better away to Biarritz next weekend.

Ulster attacked from the start and were 3-0 in in the second minute through a Pienaar penalty.

Four minutes later, though, Ludovic Mercier tied the scores after some crossing from Ulster.

Both were then off target before Mercier slotted his second to give the Italians a three-point lead.

This jolted Ulster into a response and Ulster produced a huge shove at the scrum and the visitors buckled.

Robbie Diack picked up and fed Pienaar, whose superb flick pass found Trimble and he charged over in the corner.

Aironi had former Italian captain Marco Bortolami binned for killing the ball but Ulster could only manage a second Pienaar penalty against the 14 men.

They needed a quick score in the second half and got one thanks to some sloppy work from Nick Williams, who failed to deal with a Humphreys kick to the left corner which allowed the Ulster fly-half to run up and touch the ball down.

On the hour mark, Ulster got their third score with Chris Henry, Johann Muller and Rory Best involved in a surge forward.

The ball was quickly recycled and spun left Trimble passed and Danielli juggled it before diving over.

Pienaar, having missed two conversions, gave way to Humphreys who slotted an excellent touchline conversion.

The bonus point arrived after great work from man of the match Diack allowed Pienaar dart over to the right of the posts, Humphreys again converting.
