Bellamy left top-flight football to join Cardiff on loan
|
Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy has hinted to BBC Radio 5 live that Manchester United were interested in signing him before the last transfer deadline.
The 31-year-old Welshman admits it would have caused a "stir" had the move come off and accepts a switch to Old Trafford would have caused consternation amongst City fans.
"If I had said I wanted to go there for one minute, staying [at Eastlands] would have been really tough," said Bellamy. "It would have been a miracle if it had come off."
It would have been a bold move by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to snaffle a player from United's rivals but is there any truth to Bellamy's claims?
United officials say not but you can listen to the full interview with Bellamy on Tuesday's 5 live Sport from 2000 BST.
Bellamy, who eventually signed a year-long loan deal for hometown club Cardiff City, also talks about the reasons why his Manchester City career nose-dived after Roberto Mancini took over as manager and why he thinks people who talk about loyalty in football are misguided.
