Vettel & Webber fastest in Brazil

Sebastian Vettel
Vettel is seeking a third successive pole

By Andrew Benson
BBC Sport in Sao Paulo

Red Bull drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber emphasised they are still title contenders by dominating first practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Vettel - who is 25 points behind the championship leader, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso - set the fastest time, 0.482 seconds quicker than Webber.

Australian Webber, 11 points behind Alonso, was just 0.035secs ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton's team-mate Jenson Button was fourth, with Alonso only 13th.

The Spaniard's car stopped out on the track towards the end of the session. Ferrari said the engine in the car was at the end of its life and the failure happened two laps earlier than expected.

The team had anyway been planning to change Alonso's engine between first and second practice, which starts at 1600 GMT.

Vettel's lap of one minute 12.328 seconds may appear ominous for the rest, but is not necessarily an accurate indication of form for qualifying and the race.

The teams spent the sessions evaluating set-up and various new parts on their cars.

As is normal, the top drivers waited in their garages for more than half the session so as not to waste their tyres on a dirty track and to limit mileage on their engines.

FIVE-WAY TITLE BATTLE EXPLAINED
1 ALONSO 231pts
2 WEBBER 220pts
3 HAMILTON 210pts
4 VETTEL 206pts
5 BUTTON 189pts
If Alonso wins in Brazil, he will be champion unless Webber is higher than fourth
If Alonso is second, he will be champion unless Webber is higher than eighth, Hamilton higher than fourth or Vettel wins
If Alonso is third, he will be champion unless Webber finishes in the top 10, Hamilton in the top four and Vettel in the top three
If Alonso does not finish on the podium, it will go to Abu Dhabi
Button can only stay in contention if he finishes first or second but is out if Alonso finishes in the top six or if Webber is in the top two
Vettel must beat Alonso on track to stay in contention

Renault's Robert Kubica was the first serious contender to show his hand, setting a lap of one minute 13.462 seconds after 50 minutes of the 90-minute session.

But the Pole soon lost top spot when the title contenders emerged on to the track.

Webber was the first to beat Kubica, with a 1:13.168, before Hamilton dipped underneath that with a 1:13.138.

Vettel then dipped below the 73-second barrier with a 1:12.946, Hamilton beat that with a 1:12.845 before the German knocked half a second off that with a 1:12.351.

Kubica ended up fifth, ahead of Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg, whose team-mate Michael Schumacher was eighth behind the Williams driver Rubens Barrichello.

Force India's Adrian Sutil was ninth, ahead of the Sauber of Nick Heidfeld.

Renault's Vitaly Petrov suffered a crash when he lost control going into Turn Seven, a quick uphill right-hander known as Ferra Dura.

Heidfeld's team-mate Kamui Kobayashi also crashed at Ferra Dura, a couple of minutes after Petrov and just before the end of the session.

Lotus confirm Renault engine deal

By Andrew Benson
BBC Sport in Sao Paulo

Heikki Kovalainen's Lotus
Heikki Kovalainen's 12th place in Japan is the team's best 2010 finish

The Lotus team have finally confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in Formula 1 - that they will use Renault engines next season.

The deal was agreed, and reported by BBC Sport, in September but an announcement was made only on Friday.

But it is widely believed in F1 that the team will not be called Lotus in 2011 after a naming rights dispute.

Also on Friday, Red Bull announced they would continue with Renault engines for the next two years.

Lotus Racing team principal Tony Fernandes agreed a deal to use the Lotus name in F1 this year with the owner of Lotus Cars, the Proton car company.

606: DEBATE

He has since - as exclusively revealed by BBC Sport in September - bought the rights to the historic name of the outfit in F1 - Team Lotus.

But Proton have challenged Fernandes' rights to use the name, and the dispute has reached into high levels in Malaysian politics. The country's former prime minister, Dr Mahatir Bin Mohamad, has stepped in to try to resolve it.

Both Lotus Racing and Proton have said they will make no further comment on the issue until it is resolved.

It is being strongly rumoured in F1 that Fernandes will be forced to abandon the Lotus name, and that Proton will buy into the Renault team, which may be renamed Lotus-Renault.

Lotus Racing's media release announcing the Renault deal did not mention the word Lotus, other than in the official team branding, and Renault's referred to their "new client" as the "1Malaysia Racing Team".

Fernandes said the Renault deal was an indication of his ambitions to succeed in F1.

He said: "2010 has been all about building up our team from scratch and in just one year we have laid the foundations for many exciting seasons to come and the partnership with Renault will dramatically accelerate our development plans, both on and off track.

"That is an important point - we have started a partnership with Renault and, much like taking on experienced drivers in our first year, we will be working with people who know how to win and who will help push us even further forward towards the front of the grid.

"We are realistic - we know what needs to be done to be challenging for ultimate honours in F1 and this partnership will play a very important role in helping us push ahead."

Lotus have signed a deal to combine their Renault engines with Red Bull's gearbox and hydraulics.

Lotus, who were new to F1 this year, have had to negotiate a release from their three-year contract with Cosworth to secure the Renault deal.

Australia crash to seventh defeat

Second one-day international, Sydney: Sri Lanka 213-3 (41.1 ovs) beat Australia 210 (37.4 overs) by 29 runs (D/L method)

Australia went down to their seventh successive defeat as Sri Lanka celebrated their first series win down under with a 29-run victory in Sydney.

In a rain-hit one-day international, Sri Lanka scored 213-3 in 41.1 overs leaving Australia a Duckworth-Lewis adjusted target of 244 from 39 overs.

That became 240 from 38 after yet another brief stoppage, but they never threatened and were all out for 210.

Australia have just one more ODI before the Ashes begin on 25 November.

The losing run began in a Test match at Headingley in July against Pakistan; they have since lost two further Tests in India, a Twenty20 international and three one-dayers.

Sri Lanka can sweep this series 3-0 with a win in Brisbane on Sunday, but the Aussies will be desperate to stop the rot at the Gabba, where the Ashes series starts in 20 days.

With Australia's side on Friday featuring seven players thought to be certainties to take on England in the Test matches, it was another very dispiriting display from the hosts.

Their bowling was particularly poor, with a number of wayward deliveries sent down. Left-arm paceman Mitchell Johnson took 0-43 in seven overs, struggling for line and length.

Upul Tharanga anchored Sri Lanka's innings with an unbeaten 86, beginning shakily but playing some fine shots later on. Tillakaratne Dilshan (47) and Kumar Sangakkara (45) played supportive roles and only Shane Watson (2-34) had much joy among Australia's bowlers.

606: DEBATE
Ashes_Retained

Tharanga was poised for a century until the rain came, and it never really left the SCG as the players carried on through squally showers.

The Australians' batting was scarcely better than their bowling, though the floodlights and early movement for Sri Lanka's seamers made life tough. Brad Haddin was bowled by a lovely Nuwan Kulasekara inswinger and Ricky Ponting top-edged a pull off Thisara Perera to leave the score on 32-2 in the seventh over.

Watson and Michael Clarke put on 46 before Muttiah Muralitharan got in on the act. The veteran off-spinner trapped Watson lbw before completing a diving catch at third man to help Perera grab a second wicket and end Clarke's involvement.

Neither Mike Hussey nor Cameron White were able to play a match-winning innings as Sri Lanka remained dominant with some unerringly accurate bowling.

Australia, with six wickets down, needed 61 from the last four overs. Johnson hit off-spinner Suraj Randiv for a four and a six to give them a glimmer of hope, but was run out following terrific work from Mahela Jayawardene at extra cover.

There was no way back now. Randiv picked up two wickets and Lasith Malinga delivered the final blow with a yorker to last man Clint McKay in the final over.

India increase pressure on Kiwis

First Test, Ahmedabad (day two, close): India 487 v New Zealand 69-2

Mahendra Dhoni dismisses Tim McIntosh
Tim McIntosh is caught behind by India skipper Mahendra Dhoni

India continued their dominance of the first Test in Ahmedabad as New Zealand closed day two 418 runs behind at 69-2.

After opening-day centuries from Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, seeking his 50th Test hundred, was caught and bowled for 40.

Harbhajan Singh struck five fours and three sixes in a Test-best eighth fifty, before India were 487 all out.

New Zealand lost Tim McIntosh for a duck in the third over but Brendon McCullum hit seven fours in 38 not out.

The Kiwis had made a mini-revival after India resumed on a formidable 329-3, with Tendulkar and Laxman at the crease.

They shared 66 and with the country celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights, it looked as though the milestone century would arrive at the perfect moment.

But Tendulkar never found any real fluency and gave a simple return catch to spinner Jeetan Patel.

Debutant Kane Williamson claimed his first Test wicket when Suresh Raina was smartly taken at extra cover by McCullum, and Patel trapped Laxman lbw in the final over before lunch.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori, playing in his 100th Test, then took three wickets after lunch as a total of five fell for 29.

606: DEBATE
krish

Vettori had the ignominy of being hit for four and six in successive balls by Harbhajan, but ended the innings when the India spinner, in his 88th Test, got a bottom edge and was caught behind.

The tourists made a dreadful start to their reply when McIntosh tried to avoid a short one from Zaheer Khan that barely bounced over the stumps.

The ball flicked McIntosh's gloves and gave Mahendra Dhoni a routine catch behind the stumps.

Pragyan Ojha's left-arm spin was introduced in the eighth over and he struck with the first ball of his second over.

BJ Watling pushed tentatively inside a delivery which held its line and knocked back the top of the off-stump.

McCullum showed good footwork to hit Ojha for two fours in an over, sharing an unbroken 42 with Ross Taylor, who hit three fours in his 18, but the first target for the Kiwis is to reach 219 and save the follow-on.

Rooney heads to US for rehab work

Wayne Rooney
Rooney speaks to England manager Fabio Capello at United's last home match

Injured Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will spend a week in the United States undergoing intensive conditioning work on an ankle problem.

The 25-year-old will miss Wednesday's Manchester derby, and is not expected to play for another three weeks.

Rooney is to train at the Nike Town centre in Oregon.

"He can go there without the attention he'd get here," said United assistant manager Mike Phelan. "He needs the conditioning. We all agree with that."

The England international caused controversy recently when he signed a new five-year contract only two days after stating that he wanted to leave Old Trafford.

Rooney said that concerns over the club's squad strength were behind his decision to seek an exit, but then made the shock U-turn after speaking to manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the club's owners who he stressed "convinced me this is where I belong".

Phelan did raise the possibility that Rooney could be back for the club's Premier League home match with Wigan on 21 November, if his conditioning work away from the glare of the British media goes well.

"We have the facilities [at Carrington]," said Phelan. "But we just thought it might be in the interests of him and the club to have a change of scenery for a little while.

"He has had a lot of attention lately and we want to give him the best opportunity he possibly can to be in good shape when he returns.

"If that goes according to plan, he will be available when he returns."

Ferguson, who handed over news conference duties to Phelan ahead of the home match against Wolves after picking up a virus, estimated on Tuesday that it would be another three weeks before Rooney is fit to return from his ankle injury.

He is likely to miss England's friendly with France on 17 November.

United are likely to be without Portuguese winger Nani and Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher after the pair suffered injuries in the club's 3-0 Champions League victory at Bursaspor in Turkey on Tuesday.

Schiavone upbeat ahead of final

Francesca Schiavone
Schiavone beat Oudin in her only singles win in last year's final

Francesca Schiavone has warned the USA they will face an even stronger Italy team than the one that triumphed last year in this weekend's Fed Cup final.

"It's one more year and we have more experience," said Schiavone.

"Our team is always complete with energy and confidence. That is our key and so we keep working on this."

Italy, who beat the USA 4-0 in the 2009 final, go into this year's final in San Diego with all of their players ranked higher than the top American.

The USA team is missing Serena and Venus Williams, who are both injured.

Schiavone, the reigning French Open champion, is number six in the world rankings, while Italy team-mate Flavia Pennetta is ranked 23rd.

606: DEBATE

In contrast, Bethanie Mattek-Sands is the top-ranked American, at number 58, while Liezel Huber is a doubles specialist.

They are joined in the USA team by Melanie Oudin , ranked 67, and debutant Coco Vandeweghe (114).

Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani, ranked 38 and 42 respectively, complete the Italian line-up, which is the same as the one that defeated the USA last year in Calabria.

Despite the disparity in world rankings, USA captain Mary Jo Fernandez said the final was "winnable" for her team.

"You don't just sign up and say they are ranked much higher so they are going to win," said Fernandez, a member of the USA team which defeated Spain in the 1996 Fed Cup final. "We have seen upsets in the past."

Broad on song in England warm-up

Tour match, Perth (stumps, day one of three):
Western Australia 242-8d v England 10-1

Match scorecard

Stuart Broad celebrates a wicket
Stuart Broad celebrates one of three wickets

Stuart Broad took three wickets before lunch as England began their Ashes tour with an encouraging bowling performance in their first warm-up match in Perth.

Putting out what could be their Test team against Western Australia, England fielded first in a three-day match.

Broad took two wickets in his first over, but WA recovered to reach 242-8 before declaring late in the day.

Alastair Cook was bowled by a delivery that bounced off his body onto the stumps as England reached 10-1.

Broad relished bowling with the new ball, nipping out Liam Davis and Michael Swart almost immediately for ducks, before Test batsman Marcus North (19) also departed to the tall Nottinghamshire seamer.

WA ground out their runs in the first session, reaching 45-3, before accelerating against the softer ball after lunch.

606: DEBATE
jasonwilcoxsrightfoot

Adam Voges (72) and Wes Robinson (62) put on 87 in 22.5 overs as England proved less of a force in the afternoon heat.

But James Anderson got through 22 overs, showing he is fully recovered from his broken rib. He had Luke Pomersbach caught behind by Matt Prior, while Steven Finn, Graeme Swann and Paul Collingwood each picked up a wicket as well.

England picked the 11 players who many judges expect to contest the first Test in Brisbane on 25 November, sticking to the four-bowler plan and with Ian Bell preferred to Eoin Morgan in the top six.

They lost the toss against a strong home side, but any disappointment that they were not batting first was swiftly put to one side as the second over of the morning produced two wickets.

One of the key factors in the Ashes is likely to be whether England can bowl effectively with the Kookburra balls used down under. Broad seemed to enjoy it when it was new.

He struck with only his fourth first-class ball in Australia, finding enough bounce to have Davis edging to second slip on the back foot - Swann making no mistake with a neat catch low to his left.

And Swart followed first ball, failing to avoid a short ball and looping a catch off the glove to Collingwood running in from third slip.

North kept out the hat-trick ball before England loosened their grip when Finn replaced Anderson at the Lillee-Marsh Stand end.

The Middlesex youngster struggled to find any consistency with his length. He gave both batsmen some awkward moments when he got it right but over-pitched alarmingly at times, driven straight back for four by Robinson in his first over and then serving up successive full-tosses in his next.

James Anderson
James Anderson took 1-48 and had a couple of strong appeals rejected

Anderson switched ends and was soon appealing for the wicket of Robinson, but umpire Ian Lock did not detect any edge to Prior.

Swann, famed for his knack of first-over wickets, was equally unable to part North and Robinson as England received an early lesson about the patience and hard work sure to be required this winter.

But Broad was not done with, and had North carving a back-foot edge to Swann high at second slip just before lunch.

Anderson and Swann each appealed for lbw decisions early in the afternoon session only to be rebuffed by the umpires.

And Robinson put pressure on Swann, sweeping the spinner for successive fours and hoisting him over long-on for six on the way to an otherwise painstaking half-century.

It was only when Andrew Strauss turned to Collingwood to fill in some overs that the latter's part-time medium-pace immediately brought Robinson's wicket, via a return catch.

But Voges was 54 not out at tea, and found further support from Pomersbach early in the final session.

After tea, Anderson was repaid for his discipline with the old ball when Pomersbach edged a flat-footed drive behind.

In the next over, Voges contributed to his own downfall only four runs later, taking off for an unwise single to cover and beaten to the non-striker's end by a direct hit from Collingwood.

Luke Ronchi stayed long enough to expose Finn's rustiness in a breezy 32 from 26 balls. He followed a straight-driven four with a hook for six, but got a little carried away and cut the next one straight to gully.

Swann picked up a heartening late wicket as well, Ryan Duffield edging an attempted cut behind, and a canny declaration came after just two overs with the second new ball.

Cook had cause to regret North's decision to terminate the innings as Steve Magoffin soon struck when the Essex left-hander failed to cope with a bouncy delivery.

Jordaan to stand in Fifa election

Danny Jordaan
Jordaan believes he can make a contribution

Danny Jordaan, the chief executive of the 2010 World Cup, is seeking a seat on the Fifa executive committee.

The all-powerful executive committee decides, among other things, where future World Cups will be played.

The 59-year-old South African has been nominated by his country for the post when elections take place next year.

"The World Cup profile is a big help," said Jordaan, who intends to start lobbying across the continent in the next few months.

He added: "It is important for me that Africa feels I can make a contribution."

Two of Africa's four positions on the Fifa executive committee come up for re-election in February.

One of them is held by Nigerian Amos Adamu, who has been provisionally suspended by the world body pending the outcome of an investigation into corruption allegations against him.

The other African berth up for re-election is held by Jacques Anouma, president of the Ivorian Football Federation, who has not yet made public whether he will seek another four-year term.

Adamu is expected to try to hold on to his post if he is not expelled by Fifa, whose ethics committee will decide on his future this month.

Nominations for the posts close on 23 November, three months before the election at the Confederation of African Football congress in Khartoum, Sudan.

Jordaan is the first to make his candidacy public.

His experience in football administration, dating back more than two decades, and the successful organising of the World Cup will be key parts of his election campaign.

Jordaan said he had had a surge of support from African football associations and says he is confident of winning a place on the Fifa executive as well as the Caf executive.

Traditionally, administrators seeking to work their way up to the Fifa committee serve time first as members of the Caf executive, but Jordaan is attempting both at the same time.

Purchase & Hunter strike gold for GB

By Martin Gough

Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter added a world title to their 2008 Olympic gold in the lightweight men's double scull.

Britain's Frances Houghton and Debbie Flood also returned from a year off to regain their crown in the women's quad.

But Great Britain's defending world champion men's coxless four were dramatically dumped off the podium after leading for much of their final.

Last year's bronze medallists in the women's lightweight double finished fifth, as did the GB men's quad scull.

In brutal conditions caused by a strong side-wind on Lake Karapiro, Purchase and Hunter put in a commanding display to beat Italy by a boat length, while defending world champions New Zealand were third.

Purchase, from Gloucestershire, missed last season because of illness while Londoner Hunter took 12 months off to coach in California and has suffered illness and injury this season.

But they showed no signs of their early-season form struggles, taking a half-length lead from the off.

Houghton and Flood also took a year off after the disappointment of being pushed into the silver-medal spot by China in Beijing in 2008, when Katherine Grainger was in their crew.

Flood, who spent the time qualifying to become a prison officer, returned to form and fitness in a single scull this season but Houghton has been injured and managed to win a fourth world title in her first big event since Beijing.

GB win their second gold at the rowing world championships

GB women blow rivals out of the water

Their delight in victory was emphasised by Annabel Vernon, the fourth crew member in Beijing, who stood up in the stroke seat in an emotional celebration after powerfully overhauling world champions Ukraine in the second half of the race.

Gloucester's Beth Rodford was the only remaining member of the quad that finished fifth in the world final last year.

The men's four - Britain's only winners in Poland a year ago and a favourite to repeat here - could not match that dominance, though, leading by as much as a length for three-quarters of the race.

After suffering a "crab" - catching a wave around the 750m mark - Alex Partridge, Richard Egington, Alex Gregory and Matthew Langridge gradually conceded their lead to France in the outside lane.

They looked powerless to hold on as Greece stormed past in the last 500m and, roared on by the home crowd, New Zealand also pipped them to the line.

Men's pair Andy Hodge and Pete Reed face a battle to overhaul New Zealand's reigning champions Eric Murray and Hamish Bond at the 12th attempt on Saturday.

But, unless they do so, coach Jurgen Grobler is likely to add the duo to a re-jigged four next season, aiming to have a better chance of Olympic gold in 2012.

Great Britain's women's lightweight double scull, Hester Goodsell and Sophie Hosking, also struggled with the rough water on Friday, having been fastest qualifiers for their final.

Canada's Lindsay Jennerich and Tracy Cameron took and early lead and survived a challenge from Germany while the reigning champions from Greece snatched third.

France celebrate their victory

France win as GB faves fade

Britain had qualified for the final of the men's quadruple sculls for the first time since 1982, when Steve Redgrave was in the crew.

But Olympic bronze medallist Stephen Rowbotham and talented youngsters Charles Cousins, Sam Townsend and Bill Lucas were never in the hunt as Croatia pipped Italy to the line for the country's first world title in an Olympic event.

The British crews all wore black ribbons in memory of double Olympic champion Andy Holmes, Redgrave's former pairs partner, who died recently, at the age of 51.

The second of three days of finals in New Zealand starts at 0135 GMT on Saturday.

Single sculler Alan Campbell takes on friend and arch-rival Mahe Drysdale, who pushed him into second place last year and is eyeing a fifth successive world title, but Czech Ondrej Synek is the form sculler of this season.

"My job is to get a medal," said Campbell. "There are four of us that can definitely contest that but the order will really come down to a little bit of luck on the day.

"Hopefully the luck will be on my side and I'll come out on top."

GB's lightweight men's four, containing 2007 world champions Richard Chambers and Paul Mattick, plus Rob Williams and Chris Bartley, look set for a tight battle for medals.

And women's pair Helen Glover and Heather Stanning also have a chance of a place on the podium.

Hodgson praises Gerrard display

Hodgson (left) had Gerrard to thank for a Reds turnaround

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson paid tribute to Steven Gerrard after his captain's heroics in inspiring the Reds to a 3-1 Europa League win against Napoli.

Gerrard, 30, came on at half-time with his team trailing 1-0 and scored a hat-trick to keep Liverpool top of Group K and on the brink of a last-32 place.

"It was outstanding," said Hodgson of Gerrard's performance.

"His entry on to the field was a catalyst, it galvanised the crowd and the team."

Ezequiel Lavezzi had put Napoli ahead before Gerrard beat Napoli keeper Morgan de Sanctis to a backpass by ex-Reds left-back Andrea Dossena to notch an equaliser.

Gerrard converted a penalty and finished off his hat-trick with a chip to complete the turnaround ahead of a Premier League game at home to Chelsea on Sunday.

"We owe a big debt of gratitude to him but he will be the first to join me in saying the whole team in the second half gave a good performance," added Hodgson.

"I thought tonight was a real leader's performance - the first goal was not a pretty goal.

"That was a captain's goal, the goal of a guy who wanted to get his team back in the game even at the risk of injury. That is certainly appreciated by me and my staff."

Gerrard played down his impact on the game as he also cited the part played by his team-mates.

"We went a goal down and the manager asked me to come on and see if I could help get the lads back in it," the Liverpool captain commented.

"Everyone played their part. I'm sure I'll get the headlines but it certainly wasn't just about me. Every one of the lads in the second half was just fantastic.

"For the first goal when you're put in that position against a giant of a goalkeeper you've just got to go in and hope for the best.

"There was no class involved, just determination and desire and I don't think the keeper fancied it."

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri was not happy with French referee Fredy Fautrel but also blamed his players for the manner in which they gave away their goals.

"It became increasingly clear in the second half that the referee was happy to whistle for fouls for them and was giving very little to us - this changed the course of the game," Mazzarri stated.

"But we can't just blame the referee, we were also very naive due to our lack of experience.

"The first goal was almost like an own goal the way we gave it away and that changed the atmosphere in the stadium. We conceded silly goals."

Mancini calls for Man City unity

Roberto Mancini
Mancini's side face West Brom on Sunday and Manchester United on Wednesday

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has called on his side to remain united after slumping to a third straight loss with defeat by Lech Poznan.

City, beaten by Arsenal and Wolves in their last two Premier League games, went down 3-1 to the Polish champions in Europa League Group A.

"We can change this only if we stay together," said under-fire Mancini.

"I'm disappointed because we didn't deserve to lose this game. At the moment, everything is against us."

City made a strong start at Stadion Miejski but failed to take a series of chances before Lech opened the scoring through Dimitrije Injac's low strike from distance.

Mancini's side hit back through Emmanuel Adebayor's close-range finish after the break and substitute David Silva volleyed against the crossbar as they pressed for a second.

But Manuel Arboleda inadvertently headed Dedryck Boyata's clearance into the net to restore Lech's advantage late on before Mateusz Mozdzen secured the points with an unstoppable drive.

The result will merely increase the pressure on Mancini, who was forced to reject claims of unrest in the camp following the defeats by Arsenal and Wolves.

"We lost the last three games but that is football, sometimes you play well, you deserve to score but you don't," stated the Italian.

"We played a good game and we had a lot of chances to win but we must continue to work.

"This is football. Probably if we play this game another 100 times we would win 90 times, maybe.

"But we must accept this. We must continue to work because sometimes you lose games you don't deserve to lose."

City first-team coach David Platt echoed Mancini's comments and insisted there was little reason to panic.

"We are totally confident in the players we have got," said the former England midfielder. "We are totally confident in their mentality and their ability to pick themselves up from a defeat like this."

Responding to claims in the media on in-fighting at Eastlands, Platt added: "There is a lot of negativity at this moment in time but it's external not internal.

"If you come into the training ground on a day-to-day basis there is no negativity there. The players don't like losing games, we don't like losing games.

"I've known for Roberto Mancini for 20 years. He puts pressure on himself to succeed. We all do.

"We have got good players at the football club that want to win and want to succeed. That's why defeats knock them down. But they put the boots back on in the morning and get back up very, very quickly."

Mancini made eight changes to the side that started at Wolves on Saturday as the likes of Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wayne Bridge and Joleon Lescott were recalled.

But they failed to impress against a team who have struggled in the lower reaches of the Polish league this season and sacked their manager a day before the match.

Mancini had several key players missing - including captain Carlos Tevez, Kolo Toure and Yaya Toure - but declared himself content with City's efforts.

"I'm disappointed to lose the game but I'm happy because they played a good game. It is important that we keep going," he added.

"W were missing 10 players that were at home. We have 20 good players but sometimes you can lose a game you do not deserve to lose."

City now turn their attention back to the Premier League, with a trip to West Brom on Sunday preceding the visit of local rivals Manchester United on 10 November.

The game against United at Eastlands will be one of the highest profile matches of the season.

But Platt believes his players will rise to the challenge as they seek to remain in the hunt for silverware.

"You look at it and think you have got an opportunity in the next three games to get yourself going again," he said. "Footballers have to be resilient and they have to be strong."

For Poznan manager Jose Maria Bakero, Thursday's win over City represented a remarkable start to life at the Polish champions.

He was only formally appointed on Wednesday following the dismissal of Jacek Zielinski and had only one training session with the side before the match.

And he declined to take full credit for the result, instead sharing it liberally with all concerned, including his predecessor.

"In football, you have to be lucky sometimes and we were for the goal to go 2-1 but we were better than Manchester City as a team and we deserved to win," Bakero reflected.

"I want to congratulate the team and the supporters because we did a great job. I would also like to dedicate this victory to the previous coach. I don't want to say I won or Zielinski won, we all won."

Red Bull's Mark Webber faces the press in Sao Paulo
Webber had to deal with some difficult questions about favouritism at Red Bull

By Sarah Holt and Andrew Benson
BBC Sport in Sao Paulo

Mark Webber has reopened the controversy about favouritism at Red Bull by saying the team support Sebastian Vettel more than him.

Webber has been Red Bull's leading contender in the championship since May but the team are refusing to ask Vettel to back the Australian's title bid.

It was suggested to Webber in a news conference that he did not feel the team were emotionally behind him.

Webber said: "It's obvious, isn't it?" But added it was "absolutely fine."

The 34-year-old is second in the championship heading into Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix, 11 points behind the leader, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton is third, four points ahead of German Vettel.

I've had a great opportunity with a great car to go and do some great things this year and I have done that

Mark Webber

The fifth contender, McLaren's Jenson Button, is 42 points behind Spaniard Alonso with only 50 available in the final two races here and in Abu Dhabi next weekend.

Webber's remarks came in a news conference in which he was quizzed on the team's unwillingness to put their weight behind him as their best way of beating Alonso.

After a number of responses in which he was clearly searching for the right way to respond to the line of questioning, it was suggested to him that he still seemed to think the team were not fully behind him.

He replied: "Technically everything's been very, very good."

But when it was then suggested that he did not feel the team were emotionally behind him, he replied: "It's obvious, isn't it?

"When young new chargers come on to the block, that's the way it is, which is absolutely fine because I've had a great opportunity with a great car to go and do some great things this year and I have done that. I've got favourites in life. That's how it is. It's human nature."

He added: "I think I wasn't supposed to be in the hunt. At all. So it's been maybe quite inconvenient, but I've enjoyed every bit of it."

FIVE-WAY BATTLE EXPLAINED

Webber has been with Red Bull since 2007, when they were a midfield contender.

But the team have made it clear that they are building their future around 23-year-old Vettel, who joined in 2009 after being part of their driver development programme.

The issue of the team's apparent preference for Vettel has been a running theme this season .

Webber led the championship for the first time this year after the Monaco Grand Prix in May. He lost it to Hamilton, regained it, and then lost it to Alonso after crashing out of the last race in South Korea two weeks ago, where Vettel retired from the lead with an engine failure.

When Webber's comments were put to team principal Christian Horner, he said: "It's not inconvenient (that Mark has been leading the championship).

"Mark has had tremendous support from the team. The team have given him a great car and we've done our best to give them both equal equipment.

"I'd have to understand what Mark was meaning by those comments. He's probably referring to the support of Sebastian by Helmut Marko (Red Bull's special adviser, who is close to team owner Dietrich Mateschitz).

"But that doesn't change how the team operate. Dietrich has always been very clear - he doesn't mind whether it's the oldest or the youngest world champion. We've given both as much support as we can.

"Obviously it would have been very convenient for Mark if we'd said Seb would be his rear gunner for the last few races. But that was never going to be the way we went racing - whichever way round the drivers were."

The controversy was heightened in the last week when former F1 driver Gerhard Berger, who is close to Mateschitz, said on Red Bull's own TV station that he thought Webber had let his car run back across the track after his crash in Korea in an attempt to take out one of his championship rivals - he ended up hitting Mercedes's Nico Rosberg.

Webber responded sarcastically to those remarks on Thursday by saying: "First of all, I lost control of the car and then I've regained control and tried to take someone out. I'm a bit of a genius, aren't I?"

He added: "Gerhard has had some pretty nasty accidents in his time and so have I. I would never put myself or anyone else in any more danger than I need to."

Horner said Berger's comments were "purely his personal view".

He added: "They're nothing to do with the team and it's certainly not a team view. We have always believed in freedom of speech."

Horner admitted that the team were open to the possibility of asking one driver to support the other in one of the final two races if the mathematics of the championship made it the obvious tactic.

Vettel said he was still "full of hope" that he could win the world championship.

"We've seen how much things can change in one weekend," he said.

With Alonso's team-mate Felipe Massa making it clear he will help Alonso, McLaren are also in the awkward position of deciding when to ask Button to do the same.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh said this week that the team would make the decision depending on the situation in the race.

Button said that this weekend they would not be allowed to do that as team orders are banned in F1, but that he would make his own decision on the matter.

"[Martin] won't ask me, no," added Button. "The team won't ask me to do anything because that's illegal.

"If I can't win the race, I'll make what I feel is the right decision during the race and it will be entirely my decision."

Hamilton agreed that he did not need Button's help on the track and that the best outcome would be for McLaren to perform strongly as a team.

ANDREW BENSON'S BLOG

"We can help ourselves by just getting the best out of the car," added Hamilton.

"It would be great to have both of us at the best that we've been all year, both of us right up there and doing that to divide the group - that's the only way we can help each other."

Hamilton needs results to go his way on Sunday if he is to regain the title he won at Interlagos in 2008, but he remained upbeat about his chances.

"It is still in my hands and I am generally quite relaxed," said Hamilton.

"Whatever results I'm able to achieve puts me in a stronger or weaker position. I just have to finish ahead of them and hope what goes on behind me is positive for me.

"If I win the next two races I put myself in the best position possible. I never have problems giving up. I always push to the last moment.

"The gap seems a lot but anything can happen."

Button, who captured his 2009 crown in Brazil, conceded it has now become difficult to defend his title.

"I want to fight for it again," Button said. "Most of this season I have been fighting for the world championship. Now it's very difficult to continue fighting, but there's still a bit of hope.

"I want to win the race so that's my main aim. It'll be pretty close around this circuit which makes the fight for the title even better."

Hanagan still ahead of Hughes

Paul Hanagan wins on Iron Condor
Hanagan wins on Iron Condor in the final race at Kempton

Paul Hanagan won on his final ride at Kempton on Thursday to lead Richard Hughes by two in the race for the jockeys' championship.

Irishman Hughes bagged a double on board Queen Of Cash and Dingaan but Hanagan hit back courtesy of 3-1 favourite Iron Condor.

Earlier at Lingfield, Hanagan had a success on Jeremy Noseda's Ritual while Hughes had seven races without a win.

With two days to go in the race, Hanagan leads Hughes by 188-186.

Just as Hanagan had made the most of an obvious winning chance on odds-on favourite Ritual, so did Hughes as he gave the Hughie Morrison-trained Queen Of Cash (7-2) a masterful ride in the nursery at Kempton.

606: DEBATE

Ritual is owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, whose managing director Harry Herbert said: "Hughesie actually wanted the ride, but Paul has ridden this horse the last two times and won on him so it would have been very tough to have jocked him off."

If the ride on Queen Of Cash was good, Hughes surpassed it with his effort on 13-8 favourite Dingaan, winning going away from Hanagan on Vhujon.

But just as the momentum seemed to be firmly with Hughes, Hanagan hit back through the James Eustace-trained Iron Condor.

Northern-based Hanagan was clearly relieved and commented: "I have just been down here living in a suitcase all week from last Saturday and it has been tough.

"I have been hitting the crossbar when I come here and it is great to get one on the board. It is great for racing, and just what we need - it's just not great for me or Richard.

"But I have got to go out and do what I have been doing, keep focused and not worry about what Richard is doing. But that can be quite hard at times."

Hughes had endured a trying time on Wednesday when adverse weather conditions meant his helicopter from Nottingham had to land in Leicester, meaning he missed the evening meeting at Kempton.

And, reflecting on Wednesday's travails after his win on Queen Of Cash, Hughes added: "That has made it worthwhile. The trip here was grand, I had to go back up [in the helicopter] to get my confidence back and I tell you what, I was glad to get down."

The show moves on to Southwell and Wolverhampton on Friday, with Hanagan riding at both, while Hughes will be in action solely at Wolverhampton.

Hanagan holds a definite advantage, with six booked rides at Southwell in the afternoon and a further five at Wolverhampton in the evening, compared to his rival's three rides at Wolverhampton.

Cole optimistic on playing future

Ashley Cole
Cole is still considered to be one of the best left-backs in the world

Ashley Cole believes the backroom staff at Chelsea can help prolong his career as he learns to deal with the legacy of a troublesome ankle.

The England left-back, 29, has had two operations on his ankle, including surgery on a fracture in February.

"I owe a lot to the physios and the staff," Cole told BBC Radio 5 live. "I speak to the manager and sometimes I don't train.

"We have great facilities and hopefully it will keep my career going longer."

Cole fractured his ankle on 10 February during a 2-1 defeat at Everton last season but, after a three-month absence, recovered in time for England's ill-fated 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Although he has avoided any further problems, the question of how the former Arsenal man can best recover from competitive action is now an increasingly important part of the Chelsea backroom staff's planning.

"After games it [the ankle] gets a bit stiff," Cole revealed. "It's not as if I can't train.

"I can train the next day if I want but the coaches here and the medical department say: 'Just stay inside and rest. You don't need to go out, you run enough in the games'."

And the full-back reckons that he has been in excellent form this season as the west Londoners defend their Premier League title.

"After my ankle operation I felt freer and could move better," he said. "I think I've got back to my best and maybe even better."

Cole and Chelsea's fine season continued on Wednesday as they beat Spartak Moscow to qualify for the knockout stage of Europe's top club competition with two games to spare.

The competition has not been kind to the men from Stamford Bridge in recent years - they lost on penalties to Manchester United in the 2008 final, while Barcelona halted their progress in the 2009 semi-final, and eventual winners Inter Milan knocked them out at the last-16 stage last season.

As long as my family, manager and team-mates are happy, then I'll be happy

Ashley Cole

But after victory over Russian champions Moscow, which maintained Chelsea's 100% record in Group F, boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side's sights are firmly set on bringing the trophy to Stamford Bridge for the first time when the final is played at Wembley in May 2011.

However, Cole insisted that despite near-misses in Europe, retaining the Premier League title remains his number one target this term.

"For me to win the Premier League is what I want to do every year," stated Cole, whose team top the domestic table by five points from Arsenal and Manchester United.

"To be champions of England is a great achievement, especially with how good this league is.

"There's a lot of players who said, 'We had on our hand on the Champions League, our fingers on it', and, of course, it got taken away from us. So, I think that's in the back of our minds.

"And a lot of players here want to win that because they've not done that. I'm no different, it would be nice to win the Champions League but, as I said, the Premier League's what I want to win more."

Although some of Chelsea's key players are over 30, Cole affirmed: "If you look at the experience and the quality and how fit these guys are, it doesn't matter what the age is.

606: DEBATE
JohnTerrysHardTackle

"Lamps [Frank Lampard] runs for fun and Didier [Drogba] is strong. Everyone's getting old but we're still playing well, we're experienced together, we know how we want to play and how each other plays and so far it's healthy."

Cole's private life has often been publicised in the media, and he again made headlines in September when he and pop star wife Cheryl divorced.

But Cole brushed aside his off-field issues, saying: "As long as my family, manager and team-mates are happy, then I'll be happy.

"Other things - you just got to get on with it. It happens in life. I'm here to play football and that's it."

Aside from the press coverage that accompanied his celebrity marriage, Cole has also come in for barracking from the stands - particularly from fans of his former club Arsenal whom he left for Chelsea, following a tapping-up controversy, in 2006.

However, Cole maintains he has learned to deal with the criticism.

"I probably would say I've changed. Now, I'm a little bit more relaxed and just go with the flow," he reflected.

"When I started at Arsenal I was a young guy playing for the team I supported. You're just happy, you don't know what you're actually getting yourself into.

"You just think it's all happy, it's all fun. But you have to take the good with the bad. I've had my bad times but I just want to play football and keep winning things and one day look back and say: 'You know what? I had a great career'."
