Mahela Jayawardene's 24th Test century left Sri Lanka in prime position to beat Bangladesh in the first Test.

Skipper Jayawardene hit 129 not out as Sri Lanka reached 291-4 at stumps on day three for a lead of 406 in Mirpur.

Bangladesh added a single run to their overnight 177-9, Muttiah Muralitharan finishing with 6-49, before Sri Lanka lost both their openers cheaply.

Despite generally slow progress, they then batted strongly for the remainder of the day as Bangladesh wilted.

Sri Lanka reached lunch on 53-2, before Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara (67) stretched their partnership to 135.

They were finally parted in the run-up to tea, when Sangakkara somehow got a thin edge on a leg-side delivery from Mehrab Hossain that was snapped up by the wicketkeeper.

The final session saw more urgency from Jayawardene and new batting partner Thilan Samaraweera, with the duo putting on 138 in 33 overs.

Then, with the final ball of the day, Mashrafe Mortaza bowled Samaraweera for 62 with the second new ball, raising the prospect of an overnight declaration from Sri Lanka.
