A 130-run opening stand by Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum set New Zealand up for an easy win in the second Twenty20 international against West Indies.

The victory, at a sun-kissed Hamilton, was the first for coach Andy Moles as the series ended level at 1-1.

The loss of McCullum, followed by a stunning Xavier Marshall boundary catch to remove Ross Taylor cheaply, sparked a collapse but 191-9 was a good total.

West Indies lost Chris Gayle in only the second over and finished on 155-7.

Ewen Thompson, who removed Gayle in his first over of international cricket thanks to a leg-side boundary catch from Jacob Oram, followed up an opening wicket maiden with two expensive overs as Ramnaresh Sarwan got going.

But once he had gone for a fine 53, New Zealand's middle order was stifled by spin and medium pace, and the match finished with a double-wicket maiden for Jeetan Patel.

New Zealand had not even required swing bowler James Franklin, though they were thankful for his clean hitting which produced two sixes in a knock of 20 from 11 balls - the one injection of rapid scoring in the middle and lower order.

At the start of the innings, Ryder and McCullum had combined brutality with precision placing. None of the West Indies bowlers could keep a lid on the scoring.
