Wright-Phillips faces FA charge

Shaun Wright-Phillips and Rory Delap

The Football Association has charged Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips with violent conduct after an incident in Saturday's defeat by Stoke.

Stoke's Rory Delap was shown a straight red card at the Britannia Stadium after kicking the ball at Wright-Phillips while he lay on the floor.

Wright-Phillips then appeared to kick out at Delap in return but it was missed by referee Martin Atkinson.

The 27-year-old has until 1800 GMT on Thursday to respond.

Atkinson has told the FA that, having subsequently watched video footage of the incident, he would have shown Wright-Phillips a red card if he had seen the incident at the time.
