Champions Australia have named Wycliff Palu at number eight and moved Richard Brown to flanker for Saturday's opening Tri-Nations match against New Zealand.

Palu, who has recovered from a hand injury, has missed all of Australia's matches this year and takes the place of Dean Mumm, who is on the bench.

The side is otherwise unchanged from the team that beat France 22-6 in June.

Flanker George Smith will play in his 100th Test in the match in Auckland, which is part of the Bledisloe Cup.

Australia have not conceded a try in their last 197 minutes of play but have not won at Eden Park for more than 20 years.

"It's a big opportunity for me and a good game to come back to, against the All Blacks," said Palu, who broke his hand while playing for the Waratahs during the Super 14 series.

"Physically, these All Blacks Tests are all pretty tough, but I think the mental side is going to get us over the edge and I'm definitely ready for it."

Australia's Kiwi coach Robbie Deans said the Wallabies were a better team than they were for last year's corresponding fixture, when they were beaten 39-10 by New Zealand.

"Last year we were caught on the hop to some extent. We went in hopeful and thought we'd prepared effectively," he said.

"The ferocity of that response is exactly what we're going to experience on Saturday, the circumstances are identical in many ways."
