France's Gregory Bourdy held off the challenge of Rory McIlroy to win the Hong Kong Open by two strokes.

McIlroy, from Northern Ireland, carded a brilliant 64 after starting the final round five shots off the pace.

But a five at the 17th, the sole bogey on his card, cost him dear and a 17 under par finish was not quite enough.

"I didn't look at the leaderboard until the 18th green so I didn't know McIlroy played well. I wanted to stay focused on my game," said Bourdy, who shot 67.

The win was the 27-year-old from Bordeaux's third on the European Tour and had the added bonus of earning him a place at the season-ending Dubai World Championship, which starts on Thursday.

"Dubai was a big objective and a big motivation. I need to win and I did it - it's grate," Bourdy added.

He sank four birdies during the final round, with his only mistake coming at the par-three 8th, a hole which also cost him shots on the first two days.

There was plenty of low-scoring with Italian Francesco Molinari, Bourdy's compatriot Raphael Jacquelin, and Ian Poulter and Simon Khan of England posting 64s.

Molinari shared third place with Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands on 16 under, with Poulter and Jacquelin sharing fifth place two strokes further back.

But it was 20-year-old McIlroy who really lit up the course with an inspired run of three birdies and an eagle in six holes from the 11th.

He was clearly angry with himself after three-putting the penultimate hole but second place was still good enough to lift him above Lee Westwood into top spot on the tour money list.

Westwood finished well down the field after a closing 74 left him on one under.
