Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs will have surgery on Wednesday after breaking a metatarsal during the 2-0 Champions League win over Standard Liege.
The 20-year-old injured his left foot in a challenge with Liege's Eliaqium Mangala late in Tuesday's game.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confirmed the seriousness of the injury and criticised midfielder Mangala.
"It was a very bad challenge by the number 22 and was not his first try. It doesn't look good for Gibbs," he said.
England Under-21 defender Gibbs had only just returned to fitness from an injury to his right foot suffered while away on international duty and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
His absence leaves Arsenal with selection problems in defence given the continued absence of first-choice left-back Gael Clichy, who sustained a stress fracture to his back this month.

Wenger is likely to turn to Armand Traore, although Bacary Sagna, who normally plays right-back, and centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, who is left-footed are alternatives.
William Gallas also hobbled out of the game at the Emirates with an ankle problem and a swollen eye.
The centre-back went off at the break following a clash of heads with Andrey Arshavin, which also left the Russian needing staples to close a bloody gash.
However, Wenger confirmed that the French international could recover in time for Sunday's home Premier League clash with table-toppers Chelsea.
"Gallas will recover from the eye, and from the ankle we hope in time for Chelsea," said Wenger, speaking immediately after the match.
The victory at the Emirates Stadium saw Arsenal secure top spot in Champions League Group H with a game to spare.
"It's really good for the team because we still have a game to go," said captain Cesc Fabregas.
"We can relax a little and give some rest to some players, and make sure that some of the players who don't play too much can get a game."
Samir Nasri and Denilson scored to earn the Gunners a 2-0 win over Standard Liege, a result that leaves them on an unassailable 13 points at the group summit, six clear of second-placed Olympiakos.
"It didn't go our way before half-time but we kept going, we believed and we were positive," added Fabregas.
"We did not feel it was done, but for sure we felt more confident.
"We just tried to be professional because we knew sometimes it can happen that the other team gets frustrated and you receive some bad kicks. We just tried to play our football - that's what we did."
Midfield partner Denilson added: "It was a brilliant match for me and a good win for us - I'm very proud of the group."
