Sunderland await Bent scan result

Darren Bent
Bent has scored nine Premier League goals this season

Sunderland fear Darren Bent may be sidelined for three weeks after their leading scorer underwent a scan on Monday on a suspected hamstring injury.

The England striker appeared to clutch his hamstring after scoring the winner in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

Black Cats manager Steve Bruce told the club website: "If it is his hamstring, we could be looking at three weeks out.

"We won't know anything more until the results come back so we will have to keep our fingers crossed."

The England striker is a doubt for this weekend's trip to Wigan and his absence could pose a selection problem in attack for Bruce as Kenwyne Jones is suspended after being sent off against West Ham in October.

Bent has been a revelation since his summer move to Wearside, scoring nine goals in the Premier League.

His form was rewarded with a start for England in the friendly defeat by Brazil in Qatar, but he was unable to have any impact on a game which the South Americans dominated.

Nevertheless, Bruce and his former manager at Charlton Alan Curbishley have both insisted Bent should be included in England's 2010 World Cup squad.
