Celtic exited the Europa League despite Tony Mowbray's side overcoming Hapoel Tel-Aviv in Glasgow to record their first win in Group C.
The Israelis, beaten by goals from Georgios Samaras and Barry Robson, progressed along with Hamburg after the Germans' 2-0 win over Rapid Vienna.
Samaras pounced to head home after 22 minutes from an Aiden McGeady cross as Celtic dominated the first half.
Robson curled in a free-kick after 68 minutes in a more even second period.
It was no more than a consolation played out in front of a half full Celtic Park that was more subdued than on most European occasions as Hamburg and Hapoel were left to slug it out for the top spot in the final game in Israel.

Mowbray had resisted the temptation to give the goalkeeper's jersey back to fit-again Artur Boruc, with Lukasz Zaluska retaining his place despite Celtic receiving special dispensation to include his Poland international colleague.
Despite his downbeat demeanor, Mowbray was pleased enough with his side's performance in their weekend victory over St Mirren to make just one change, Robson coming in for the ineligible Zheng Zhi.
And Celtic started with great purpose, Scott McDonald firing low into the far corner of the net after only five minutes only to be pulled up for offside.
Hapoel managed to douse the home fires until the 18th minute when Aiden McGeady powered down the wing and his low cut-back was met by McDonald, whose snap shot from 12 yards was held by goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama at the second attempt.
The visitors almost immediately created a chance of their own following a quick free-kick that caught Celtic's defence on the hop, but Itay Shechter's volley landed on top of the net with Zaluska struggling.
Celtic survived that scare and, seconds later, broke the deadlock, with McGeady again the creator with a cross that found Samaras powering into the penalty box to head home from 10 yards.
McGeady squandered a chance to add to the scoring following a quick break when, instead of trying to find one of five team-mates stealing into the box, he elected to shoot straight at Enyeama.
Robson curled a free-kick just wide before he was denied by a desperate challenge by Enyeama and defender Ben Dayan after the winger tried looked poised to score after a prodded Samaras effort struck the far post.
Obviously unhappy with his side's performance, Hapoel coach Eli Gutman withdrew Zurab Menteshashvili and Samuel Yeboah and brought on Nemanja Vucicevic and Maaran Lala at half time.

Gutman obviously fancied his side's chances of a fightback similar to the first meeting between the sides in Israel and the more attacking system began to work in the visitors' favour.
Shechter tested Zaluska with a long-range effort that forced the unsighted goalkeeper to turn the ball wide for a corner.
The players might not have known it, but news of Hamburg's two goals after the break against Rapid coincided with Celtic losing their way in terms of possession.
However, Marc-Antoine Fortune, who had just replaced the tiring Samaras, won a free-kick 18 yards out and Robson curled the ball into the bottom near corner to give Celtic a two-goal cushion.
From then on, it was Hapoel on the attack, with Zaluska saving at the feet of Shechter after a poor Danny Fox pass back, a diving header from Lala sliding just wide and a Vucicevic drive deflecting just side.
Fortune was denied by a good Enyeama save from close range at the other end, while McDonald somehow screwed the ball wide when Robson laid it on a plate on the break.
