Champions event set for 2010 Open

Paul Lawrie, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Lehman
Lawrie, Weiskopf and Lehman won the challenge in 2000 at St Andrews

Former winners will take part in a four-hole challenge on the eve of next year's Open at St Andrews.

The event, to be screened live by the BBC, is to mark the 150th anniversary of golf's oldest major, with invites going out to all 32 living champions.

The first group will tee-off around 1600 BST on 14 July and play the first, second, 17th and 18th holes.

A similar event celebrated the 2000 Open at St Andrews and prize money will be donated to charity.

David Hill, The R&A's director of championships said: "The Open Champions' Challenge in 2000 was a great success and we expect it to be so again a decade on in 2010.

"We hope that the majority of our former champions will accept the invitation and join us in St Andrews to help commemorate this very special occasion."

In 2000, 22 former winners took part and the team of Tom Weiskopf, Tom Lehman and Paul Lawrie claimed victory with a score of two under par, while the event raised £40,000.
