Martin has endured an emotional year after narrowly avoiding losing his card
|
Pablo Martin shot a 69 to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa by one stroke on 14 under par at the European Tour's opening event.
The Spaniard, 23, only guaranteed his Tour card on the final day last season and coolly held off Charl Schwartzel.
The South African trailed by two on the 18th as Martin calmly holed out to win.
Welshman Sion Bebb, one behind with five to go, plummeted with a six on the 14th, while Ernie Els dropped from second to 17th with a miserable 77.
Only two years ago Martin became the first amateur to win on the circuit and he is the only one to capture titles as an amateur and a professional.
It completes a remarkable recovery from a shocking collapse in form when he missed 20 out of 22 cuts and finished last season 118th on the money list with only the leading 120 to keep their cards.

The Malaga golfer, who started the week 488th in the world, was in buoyant mood after finishing 2009 on a high - a year that began by missing the first seven cuts.
"It's an unbelievable feeling," Martin said. "I am so happy and there was so much emotion."
The final round had a number of victims falling out of contention late on.
As well as the disappointments for Bebb and and Els, Ireland's Gareth Maybin took seven on the final hole when lying third and Frenchman Michael Lorenzo-Vera had an eight to slip from fourth to eighth.
