Ronnie O'Sullivan fought back from 2-0 down to lead Matthew Stevens 5-3 after the opening session of their first-round match in the UK Championship.
Stevens started brightly but O'Sullivan reeled off three frames in a row as he took control against the Welshman.
Stevens made it 3-3 with a century break, but the Englishman won the last two to sneak in front.
O'Sullivan, a four-time champion, needs four more frames to earn a place in the next round against Peter Ebdon.
In a best of 17-frame contest, the two former winners will play to a finish in the evening session at the Telford International Centre.
