Portsmouth's Primus quits playing

Primus only signed a one-year contract extension at Portsmouth in July

Portsmouth defender Linvoy Primus has announced his retirement after failing to overcome a serious knee injury.

The 36-year-old has not made a single appearance this season and surgeons have advised him not to play again following a further knee operation.

Initially sidelined by surgery to the knee in 2007, Primus will now work in an ambassadorial role for Portsmouth.

"I would rather have a good knee for the rest of my life than to try to play on and make the knee worse," he said.

"I've got think of the long term rather than the short term. To finish my career in the Premier League is great."

Primus, who joined the club on a free transfer from Reading in 2000, only signed a one-year contract extension at Fratton Park in July this year.

But his final appearance for the club will now be as a late substitute against Sunderland in May.

Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie said: "Linvoy is Mr Portsmouth and we're sad that he will not be donning a blue shirt again. He has been a great servant to the club and is loved by everyone here and in the city.

"But Linvoy still has so much to give to the club so we're delighted that he is going to be staying with us in an ambassadorial role."

Primus made 219 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring six goals.
