Sachin Tendulkar scored his fifth Test double century to help India to 669-9 at the close of play on day four of the second Test against Sri Lanka.
He put on 256 runs for the fifth wicket with Suresh Raina, who scored a debut ton in India's reply to Sri Lanka's first innings score of 642-4 declared.
India then suffered a mini-collapse, slipping from 592-6 to 669-9.
The match is likely to end in a draw, with India taking a 27-run lead into the final day's play in Colombo.
Tillakaratne Dilshan was the architect of the collapse, removing Tendulkar for 203 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni for a patient 76 before Harbhajan Singh went without scoring, while Ajantha Mendis took his fourth wicket of the match when he bowled Abhimanyu Mithun for 41.

Tendulkar was first to fall to Dilshan's part-time spin, caught by keeper Prasanna Jayawardene as he attempted to block a flighted delivery from the Sri Lankan.
Tendulkar, the all-time leading scorer in Test cricket with over 13,500 runs, scored his 203 off 347 balls, hitting 23 fours and one six.
Tendulkar has now scored five Test double centuries but is unlikely to match either the nine made by West Indies batsman Brian Lara or the 12 achieved by Australia legend Sir Donald Bradman.
Following Tendulkar's dismissal Harbhajan fell for a duck when his drive through midwicket went straight to Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara.
Dhoni's patient knock of 76 from 138 balls came to an end when he was caught and bowled by Dilshan before number nine Mithun, whose 41 showed just how easy the pitch was, fell shortly before the close of play.
Earlier, Raina had scored 120 off 228 balls before he was caught by Sangakkara following a quicker delivery off Mendis.
