Atletico stun Inter in Super Cup

Atletico Madrid secured the European Super Cup with a deserved 2-0 win over Champions League holders Inter Milan.

Former Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes gave Atletico the lead in Monaco with a low shot that beat Inter's Julio Cesar at his near post on 62 minutes.

In the closing stages Simao Sabrosa set up a simple tap-in for Sergio Aguero.

Inter won a penalty in the final minute after Raul Garcia fouled Goran Pandev, but Atletico keeper David de Gea easily saved Diego Milito's weak spot-kick.

Europa League winners Atletico were well worth their win with Rafael Benitez's Inter decidedly off the pace.

The defeat deprived Inter and their new coach, who left Liverpool during the summer for the San Siro, of the chance of a second trophy in a week having won the Italian Super Cup last weekend with a 3-1 victory over Roma.

Last season Inter, under Jose Mourinho, won a Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup Treble.

Elsewhere in Europe, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, who were beaten by Inter in the Champions League, slipped to a surprise 2-0 defeat by promoted Kaiserslautern.

In front of a 49,780 capacity sellout crowd, Ivo Ilicevic blasted a 36th-minute shot in to give Kaiserlautern the lead.

A minute later the Croatian midfielder set up countryman Srdan Lakic who slotted home his third goal in two matches, though Ilicevic was sent off in stoppage time after picking up a second yellow card.
