Tharanga led the way for Sri Lanka with crucial a knock of 70

Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by three wickets with nine overs to spare in the one-day international tri-series at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.

The Black Caps thrashed India in the series opener, but BJ Watling was their only batsman to offer much resistance, scoring 55 in Friday's 192 all out.

Seamer Kyle Mills took 4-41 as New Zealand threatened a shock victory.

But Upul Thuranga (70) and Kumar Sangakkara (48) combined to guide Sri Lanka to 195-7 in the 41st over.

The third match is on Monday when Sri Lanka play India.
