Welbeck set for Sunderland move

Welbeck celebrates his Carling Cup goal against Wolves

Manchester United's Danny Welbeck is having a medical at Sunderland ahead of a proposed season-long loan switch.

The 19-year-old England Under-21 striker made his United first-team debut in September 2008 and played in the 2009 Carling Cup final.

Last season he featured in the Champions League against Besiktas before joining Preston on loan.

He scored two goals in his first three games before a knee injury brought a premature end to his time at Deepdale.

The arrival of Welbeck would fill the gap in Sunderland's forward line left by the departure of Kenwyne Jones.

The Trinidad and Tobago striker, who was with Sunderland for three years, joined Stoke for £8m on Wednesday.
