Pugh's last-gasp penalty was his fifth league goal of the season

Marc Pugh's controversial injury-time penalty earned promotion hopefuls Bournemouth a point against League One leaders Brighton.

Pugh netted from the spot following a Tommy Elphick handball which the hosts claimed occurred outside the box.

Kazenga LuaLua's superb long-range strike had given the hosts the lead after the break.

Glenn Murray and Ashley Barnes then wasted chances to double the advantage and Pugh made them pay late on.

Referee Darren Sheldrake consulted with his assistant following Elphick's handball and pointed to the spot, allowing Pugh to send keeper Casper Ankergren the wrong way and snatch a point.

Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:
"I didn't see it [the penalty] because I was too far away. We watched it as soon as we got in because technology gives you a chance to watch it.

"The big disappointment was the linesman was in the wrong position to give it.

"The referee gave a free-kick and he was closer to the action. It was very tight to decide if it was inside or outside of the box. It was difficult."

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent:
"We can play a lot better than that but we've competed really well.

"We were looking to hit Brighton on the counter-attack, frustrate them, but then the scored. A real hammer blow.

"We got a little bit of luck with the penalty, but we'll take it.

"What a professional [Steve Fletcher]. He ran around like a 20-year-old. The desire and the hunger for a man his age is testament to him."
