Greene grabs first gold for Wales

Greene beat Williams into second at this year's European Championships

Dai Greene won Wales' first gold of the 2010 Commonwealth Games with victory in the men's 400m hurdles final as compatriot Rhys Williams took bronze.

Greene clocked 48.52 seconds to finish 0.11 seconds ahead of defending champion Louis van Zyl of South Africa and Williams, who clocked 49.19.

Williams took silver behind Greene at this year's European Championships.

Scotland's Eilidh Child won silver in the women's final, finishing behind Muizat Odumosu of Nigeria.

Child ran 55.62 to finish .34 seconds behind Odumosu and ahead of Jamaica's Nickiesha Wilson. England's Meghan Beesley finished seventh in 58.36.

Gareth Warburton of Wales finished fourth in the men's 800m with Boaz Lalang leading home a Kenyan one-two-three.

Englishman Leon Baptiste qualified fastest for the men's 200m final, clocking a personal best 20.43 seconds in his semi to finish ahead of Welsh favourite Christian Malcolm (20.53). England's Marlon Devonish (20.70) is also into Sunday's final.

English pair Abi Oyepitan and Joice Maduaka made the women's equivalent along with Scottish 400m specialist Lee McConnell.

Eleni Artymata of Cyprus was fastest through in 23.15 with Oyepitan the top British athlete in second in 23.33.
