Kuznetsova wins Pilot Pen as Szavay retires

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova won the Pilot Pen championship on Saturday when Hungarian qualifier Agnes Szavay retired with a back injury in the second set of the final.

The unseeded Szavay had won the first set 6-4 against the top seed but, after going down 3-0 in the second, she burst into tears and was unable to continue.

It was the third straight match that Kuznetsova had won after her opponent retired through injury or illness.

The victory gave the Russian her first title of the year and the ninth of her career.
