606: DEBATE
|
|
By Jonathan Stevenson
|
1351: Now Arsenal should score - neither defence has bothered turning up and it's making for a sensational game. Robin van Persie finds Samir Nasri in acres of space on the left of the penalty area, but he cuts inside and his shot is well parried by Peter Enckelman.
1350: Cardiff are rampant. They are having joy down the wings and through the middle - Arsenal must sort their defence out and quickly.
1349: Wonderful stuff down the left from ludicrous international retiree Paul Parry, but his cross is volleyed over by Joe Ledley. Moments later Cardiff should score again as Parry puts Bacary Sagna on his backside, but he blazes over from 12 yards.
1347: Aaron Ramsey has shaken off his shaky start and is now stroking the ball around beautifully - it's a bit like watching a Cesc Fabregas clone. Meanwhile the referee has to ask for another ball after some Cardiff fans refuse to give it back to Bacary Sagna. Petty.
1346: "This is like a Cup match from the 1980s - a really good match on a really old ground. Magic FA Cup."

1344: Arsenal are rattled here, they keep giving the ball away and chances are coming for Cardiff. Another ball over the top splits the Gunners defence and it sits up nicely for Ross McCormack to volley just wide of the far post from the edge of the box.
1341: Aaron Ramsey loses possession in the midfield and former Arsenal striker Jay Bothroyd rifles in a fierce left-foot drive from 30 yards that flies a few feet over. Good hit.
1340: Arsenal give the ball away in midfield again and Joe Ledley crosses from the left, Ross McCormack not quite getting his header right as it flashes wide from close range.
1337: Strange offside trap that by Arsenal, their defence waiting for Jay Bothroyd to be flagged when the ball was intended for Chris Burke. The former Rangers winger cuts inside from the right, but his shot is deflected twice into the path of Lukasz Fabianski.
1336: "I just can't understand why Wenger starts Eboue instead of Vela. MADNESS!"
Woody, Arsenal fan, via text on 81111
1334: Great work down the left by Jay Bothroyd, one of those footballers with fabulous ability but who doesn't always showcase his talent. He beats two defenders and wins a corner, but it comes to nothing.
1333: "Aaron Ramsey is getting a few boos but he looks a very calm young man and I don't think he'll be too bothered by it."
BBC Radio 5 Live's Martin Keown
1331: The early Arsenal touches are being very heavily booed by the Cardiff faithful. Expect it to be very uncomfortable for the Gunners.
1330: The repeat of the 1927 FA Cup final is under way in south Wales.
1329: The teams are out at Ninian Park, the atmosphere is electric. Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale said this to a Sunday newspaper: "The only place I found more intimidating than Ninian Park was Galatasaray." Are you ready, Arsenal?
1326: "Stevo, do you ever get bored of working weekends?"

Mate, I come alive at weekends. Where else am I gonna be?
1324: "We are not scared. But against a Championship club away, you have to be well prepared. We are near the top of the Premier League so we must show we can compete and show the quality that has got us to where we are."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger
1323: Back to today's game. Dave Jones' Cardiff side, who reached the final last year don't forget, are in superb form. They are unbeaten in 10 games and have won their last four in a row in front of their home fans - not conceding a goal in the process. Arsenal are unbeaten in seven games and have won their last four. Confidence all-round should be sky high.
1320: "LOL, you must be (Ars)havin' a laugh if you think Andrei will help the Gunners this season! You've got another trophyless year ahead!!"
Deels, via text on 81111
At 'LOL', I lost faith in your argument.
1317: I'm sure I'll have to say this again, but if you're interested in the draw for the fifth round, it's due to take place at about 1815 GMT. I'll bring it to you right here, so if you can hang around after the Merseyside derby, that'd be proper grand.
1314: Cardiff are without injured winger Peter Whittingham, so Chris Burke comes in for him in the one change to the side that draw with Birmingham. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger makes five changes from the team that defeated Hull, with Aaron Ramsey starting against the club that sold him for £5m last June. Lukasz Fabianski starts in goal, while Kieran Gibbs, Alex Song and Nicklas Bendtner also play.
1312: "(See 1304) Wenger has praised our away support this season, it's at home where we're quiet. I still think Ramsey will suffer from the anxiety of the occasion, but we should ultimately come through this one."

1309: Rumours abound that Everton's midfield diamond Mikel Arteta could miss out on the Anfield encounter later, he may have picked up a rib injury in training this week. It is only speculation though, to clarify. Will try to keep you posted.
1307: Let's not forget, as well, that there is a fairly big game coming up later. Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton go tete-a-tete for the second time in six days, with bragging rights still up for grabs after their 1-1 draw in the league on Monday. Blimey, there are a lot of bragging rights available today aren't there?
Liverpool v Everton preview
1304: "I'm still not convinced about Arshavin, but if Arsenal get him I hope he proves me wrong. Richards would be a superb buy. People forget he's still got a long career ahead of him! And if Cardiff is as loud as you say it is, we could suffer. Sadly, Arsenal fans aren't known for our vocal support."

1300: Stevo's Predos:

1255: Arsenal have been heavily linked with a £7m move for Manchester City defender Micah Richards in today's newspapers. Thoughts, Arsenal fans? He's not in great form, but a couple of years under Arsene Wenger's supervision could do England a real turn. Oh, and according to one paper, the Gunners have until midnight tonight to wrap up a deal for Zenit's wily Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin. Please bring him to England, Arsene. Pretty please.
Sunday's gossip column
1252: I'm hearing that Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal's former Cardiff City teenage midfielder, will play from the start today. Full teams should be on the way shortly.
1250: "If Arsenal win the FA Cup this year, Wenger might be just about forgiven for this season's flop."
Amz, B'ham, via text on 81111
1248: If tennis floats your particular boat, the great Sam Lyon is currently casting his eyes over the Australian Open, with reigning men's champion Novak Djokovic in action against Marcos Baghdatis, after epic wins for Roger Federer and Jelena Dokic. Feel free to have a cheeky peek, if you wish.
Live text - Australian Open
1245: "Is it just me, or even though Arsenal have won their last four or five games, are they are the most shaky of the "big four"? YOU CAN DO IT CARDIFF!! I'd like striker-less Everton to scrape a win against Liverpool in the last minutes too."

1242: These two have some previous, as well. They tell you that very early on when you arrive in Cardiff. In 1927, they met in the FA Cup final in front of 91,206 fans at Wembley Stadium. The winner proved to be one of the most famous FA Cup goals of all time.
With 16 minutes remaining, Cardiff's Scottish striker Hughie Ferguson shot straight at Arsenal goalkeeper Dan Lewis, who just happened to be Welsh. Somehow, the ball squirmed between his arm and his body and in a desperate attempt to retrieve it, Lewis knocked the ball over the line. It remains to this day the only time the FA Cup has been won by a non-English club.

1238: "I wouldn't say we're confident, because Arsenal are a wonderful football club. I was at Leeds when we were top of the Premier League and came to Cardiff and lost, so we know what's possible. It'll be difficult, but it's possible."
Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale
1235: I'm happy to reveal that I spent three years of my life residing in the Welsh capital city and so have a little bit of a soft spot for the Bluebirds. Rarely do fans anywhere get more passionate than the Cardiff ones and they will certainly make life difficult for their more illustrious opponents.
1230: So far, on FA Cup fourth round weekend, it's England 0-1 Wales, thanks to Swansea's magnificent victory at Cup holders Portsmouth yesterday. At a heaving Ninian Park today, Cardiff can earn the Welsh 100% bragging rights over their English brethren by knocking out the mighty Arsenal.
There are only two games today, but what a two games. Text your thoughts throughout the day to 81111 and the debate is getting under way on 606.
