Poortvliet has paid the price for a poor run of results
|
Southampton head coach Jan Poortvliet has resigned from his post with immediate effect.
The 53-year-old Dutchman, who played at the 1978 World Cup, had been in charge at St Mary's since taking over from Nigel Pearson last May.
Poortvliet took the decision to stand down in response to the club's poor home form - they are currently second from bottom of the Championship.
Academy director Mark Wotte has taken over from his compatriot.
His first game will be Tuesday's trip to Norwich who lie just outside the relegation zone.

Southampton, who are also struggling financially off the field, are without a fixture in the FA Cup this weekend, having been defeated by Manchester United in the third round.
Poortvliet had previously coached in his homeland with RBC Roosendaal, Den Bosch, Telstar and Helmond Sport.
