Recovering Albrecht returns home

Daniel Albrecht
Albrecht has been tipped to take the World Cup title in the near future

Doctors are optimistic that Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht will recover from head and lung injuries after his training crash in Austria on Thursday.

The super-combined world champion crashed during downhill training for the World Cup event in Kitzbuehel.

The 25-year-old was airlifted to hospital in Innsbruck with bleeding on the brain and a lung contusion.

"We do not have any major concerns right now and are cautiously optimistic," said doctor Norbert Mutz.

"His life is not in any immediate danger, although some danger still exists. But that is normal after a crash like this."

Albrecht, who is one of the Swiss team's most talented skiers, lost control on the Streif course after becoming airborne for about 40 metres and landed on his back.

He was placed in an induced coma but doctors confirmed that his brain had not swollen and his lungs had since stabilised, although he willd be kept in the coma until his organs had stabilised sufficiently .

Albrecht, currently eighth in the World Cup standings with two GS wins this season, was preparing for this weekend's Hahnenkamm races.
