Tottenham make new Jones approach

Kenwyne Jones
Any deal involving Jones could see Darren Bent move the other way

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has revealed the club have made a fresh approach for Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones.

Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia has previously said they have no chance of signing Jones after Spurs made a £15m bid for the Trinidad and Tobago star.

The 24-year-old worked with Redknapp at Southampton before joining the Black Cats for £6m in 2007.

Redknapp said: "I have no idea how far the chairman has got with it or even whether Sunderland want to do a deal."

If Spurs are successful in signing Jones, who has scored seven goals this season, he would be Redknapp's third big-money signing in the January transfer window.

The former Portsmouth boss has already raided his old club to sign Jermain Defoe for a fee thought to be about £15m, while Wilson Palacios arrived from Wigan for £12m.

Any deal involving Jones could see Darren Bent move in the opposite direction, although Redknapp admits he is concerned by the lack of strength in depth in the Spurs squad.

"We are short in one or two areas," added Redknapp.

"I had to put Heurelho Gomes on the bench even though he is injured because the alternative goalkeeper is a 16-year-old.

"I have brought Palacios in from Wigan to give us a bit of drive and energy in midfield. When we get Jermaine Jenas and Aaron Lennon back, it will give us a bit more pace as well."
