South Africa trail Australia by 214 runs after a devastating spell of bowling reduced the hosts to 138-7 at the end of day two of the first Test.

Andrew McDonald took 3-25, while Mitchell Johnson ended the day on 3-37 and forced Graeme Smith to retire hurt.

JP Duminy remains unbeaten on 73 alongside Dale Steyn (8) with South Africa needing 15 more runs to avoid the follow-on in Durban.

Australia were dismissed for 352 having added just 49 to their overnight score.
