Dwain Chambers and Mo Farah will carry Britain's medal hopes at this weekend's European Indoor Championships in Turin.

Controversial sprinter Chambers, 31, is tipped for 60m gold, while Farah, 25, could top the podium in the 3,000m.

Team GB's chances of success in Italy have been hit by several withdrawals in the build-up.

Kelly Sotherton (pentathlon), Chris Tomlinson, Jade Johnson (both long jump) and Chris Warburton (1500m) are all out of contention with injuries.

Chambers, who remains barred from GB Olympic selection after serving a two-year doping ban, ran a 60m personal best of 6.51 seconds last month.

He impressed at the GB trials in Sheffield, and is joined in Turin by Craig Pickering and Simeon Williamson. Tyrone Edgar is also injured.

Somali-born Farah knocked more than six seconds off his own British 3,000m indoor record at the UK Indoor Grand Prix, winning in seven minutes 34.47 secs.

He failed to reach the 5,000m final at last year's Beijing Olympics and is determined to make amends.

"I was really disappointed with what happened at the Olympics, but I've [since] done a lot of hard work," he said.

"I went out to Ethiopia in the winter and trained really hard and then went to Kenya and trained there. I've learned a lot over the last year."

Farah is hoping to emulate John Mayock, who won European 3,000m indoor gold for Britain in 1998, and whose British record he broke earlier this year.

"I've already got one of his records, so if I can do what John did it would be nice. He's a great guy."

"But I can't just say 'Yeah, I'm going for a medal', and then sit back."

Meanwhile, veteran sprinter Donna Fraser, 36, has hinted that a good showing in Turin could have an impact on her retirement plans.

"Things might change if Sunday goes well," she said. "I have a race plan, and anything is possible.

"I've had a completely different outlook this winter - just taking every day as it came. I've learned from my mistakes in the last two years."
