Nadal secures Davis Cup progress

Rafael Nadal saw off Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 6-1 to seal victory for Davis Cup holders Spain in their World Group first-round tie against Serbia.

Nadal and David Ferrer both won their opening singles in straight sets on Saturday with Ferrer upsetting Djokovic and Nadal thrashing Janko Tipsarevic.

Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki then beat Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Robredo in the doubles to keep the tie alive.

But world number three Djokovic never looked like beating Nadal in Benidorm.

He put up a better fight than he had in his error-strewn loss to Ferrer, but was unable to cope with the world number one's superior hitting.

It was Nadal's 12th win in 12 Davis Cup singles rubbers since he lost his 2004 debut against Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic.

Ferrer made the final margin of victory 4-1 with a 6-0 6-3 win over Troicki.

Second seeds Spain will play either Germany or Austria in the quarter-finals in July.

Germany were leading their tie 2-1 after the second day's play in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Ferrer was due to play Tipsarevic in Sunday's remaining singles in the best-of-five tie.

It had been scheduled to begin on Friday but was postponed after high winds damaged seating at the purpose-built arena in the Mediterranean resort.

Elsewhere in the World Group, Croatia made it 4-0 against Chile on Sunday as Roko Karanusic beat Guillermo Hormazabal 7-5 6-3.
