Smith set for shock Wolves move

England coach Tony Smith is set to make a surprise return to club rugby by taking over at struggling Warrington.

The Wolves, who have lost their first three games of the season, have called an "extraordinary" news conference for 1330 GMT on Thursday to outline plans.

Smith is expected to continue with England on a part-time basis and work with present Wolves coach James Lowes.

Lowes will attend the news conference, suggesting he will remain on the coaching staff in some capacity.

Smith and former Great Britain captain and coach Ellery Hanley have both been linked with the Warrington job in the past.

The 42-year-old, who enjoyed success at club level with Huddersfield and Leeds, is believed to want to return to Super League when his deal with the Rugby Football League runs out at the end of the Four Nations tournament in November.

In order to take up the post, Smith would have to relinquish his day job as technical director with the RFL, with the England post reverting to a part-time position.

Smith appointed Lowes to his England backroom staff in 2007 but the former Bradford and Great Britain hooker left the role ahead of the World Cup in order to concentrate on his new position at Warrington.

The Wolves have lost their last eight matches going back to last August and were booed off the pitch following their recent home defeat by Catalans Dragons.

Ironically, their next match is against champions Leeds Rhinos, Smith's former club, at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday.
