Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington has withdrawn from the women's 400m freestyle at the Scottish Championships in Glasgow because of asthma.

In Friday's 800m the 20-year-old came within three seconds of the world record she set in Beijing in 2008.

She was due to race in the final heat in the 400m but her absence is unlikely to cost her a place in the British team for next month's World Championships.

The second fastest time in history would be needed on Saturday evening.

Asked about Adlington's condition a British Swimming spokesman said: "Becky suffers from asthma, as do a lot of swimmers."

Sasha Matthews was fastest in Saturday morning's heats, clocking four minutes 11.86 seconds, almost 11 seconds slower than the target time set by Adlington in the British Championships in Sheffield in March.
