The world number six had not faced Gonzalez since the second round of the Australian Open in 2007.

Both men have had similarly successful years so far, reaching the semi-finals of the French Open where Gonzalez lost to Sweden's Robin Soderling and Del Potro was beaten by eventual champion Roger Federer.

But it was Del Porto who had the upper hand in Washington after winning the first-set tie-break.

He broke in the second and fourth games of the second set on his way to a 5-0 lead.

Despite allowing Gonzalez back in when was broken in game seven, Del Porto made the most of his next chance to serve for the match, ending it when Gonzalez netted a backhand.
