Phelps set to compete in Britain

Michael Phelps
Phelps won five gold medals at the World Championships this year

Michael Phelps is to race in Britain for the first time at a 'Duel in the Pool' swimming meet at the Manchester Aquatics Centre on 18 and 19 December.

The event pits a 36-strong American team against a European team made up of six male and six female swimmers from each of Britain, Germany and Italy.

Phelps, who has won a record 14 Olympic gold medals, leads the US team for the 'Ryder Cup' style short course meet.

The full team line-ups are expected to be announced next week.

Britain's double-Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington said: "To be able to watch the cream from Britain, Germany and Italy race the best of the United States, including Phelps in the UK for the first time, is an amazing opportunity."

Phelps, who won a unique eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, followed that with five more golds at the World Championships earlier this year in Berlin.

America challenged Australia to the first 'Duel in the Pool' meet in 2003 and comprehensively won the first three competitions which were held on a biennial basis.

Earlier this year, Australia took on, and beat, Japan.
