Surrey sign Indian spinner Chawla

Piyush Chawla
Chawla has played two Tests and 21 one-day internationals

Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has signed for Surrey as the county's overseas player for 2010.

Chawla, 20, joins from Sussex, for whom he took 36 first-class wickets at an average of 27.25 in 2009.

Surrey have already signed Steven Davies and Gareth Batty from Worcestershire for next season.

"There is a fine spin tradition at Surrey which runs from Jim Laker... to Saqlain Mushtaq," said Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams.

"I wanted the player to be of true international class and be able to commit to spending the vast majority of their season with us, Piyush fulfils both requirements handsomely."

Chawla made an instant impression after arriving at Hove midway through the season, scoring a blistering hundred and taking six wickets in an innings on debut before returning match figures of 11-170 in his next outing.

Chawla, who also played for Sussex in the current Champions League and who has played two Tests and 21 one-day internationals, will join up with Surrey after the Indian Premier League, in which he represents the Kings XI Punjab.
