Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott is expected to be out of action for between four-to-five weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

The 27-year-old England international has had treatment to clear floating debris from his knee.

Lescott, replaced by Nedum Onuoha for Wednesday's trip to Tottenham, is likely to miss eight more matches including the Carling Cup semi-final.

Since signing from Everton in the summer, Lescott has made 18 starts.

However, he is likely to miss both legs of the Carling Cup clash with city rivals United as well as Premier League games against Sunderland, Stoke, Wolves and Blackburn and the FA Cup trip to Middlesbrough.

Lescott, who cost the club £22m after a protracted move from Goodison Park, joins Wayne Bridge on the injury list.

The left-back suffered knee ligament damage against former-club Chelsea at the start of the month, but is expected to return in early January.
