Lee Chong Wei celebrates his victory in Birmingham
|
World number one Lee Chong Wei clinched his first All England Championship with a 21-19 21-19 win over battling unseeded Japanese Kenichi Tago.
The Malaysian, last year's runner-up, came back from 15-11 down in the opener to convert his fourth game-point.
Tago fought back to 14-14 in the second but Chong Wei landed the final shuttle just inside the baseline to win.
Denmark's Tine Rasmussen overcame holder and top seed Wang Yihan of China 21-14 21-19 in a tense women's final.
Chong Wei, whose route to the title opened up after the surprise exit of world and Olympic champion Lin Dan in the quarter finals, admitted the final was a great opportunity to claim his first All England crown.

"I thought this was my best chance when Lin got knocked out," he said.
"It is a big relief and big dream fulfilled, especially as this is the 100th All England championships."
Rasmussen avenged her defeat in last year's final despite a spirited comeback from defending champion Wang in the final game.

Wang levelled at 17-17 from 17-14 down, but it was Rasmussen who held her nerve to win.
"I was thinking about the title, which you shouldn't do, but she was too," said Rasmussen.
"It is a wonderful feeling because this is something everybody wants."
Susan Eglestaff, Andrew Smith and Rajiv Ouseph's second-round exits were the best British singles results at the championships and new Great Britain singles coach Kenneth Jonassen has promised to raise standards.
"When they think they have reached their limit, I want to push them more," said the Dane.
"I will show them we need to examine every part of their game to see if we can improve that.
"We need to bring intensity to practice. We want a group of three or four players wanting this more than anything.
"Our goal always has to be to push the limits and never be satisfied with the current level, always wanting more."
The former world number two takes up his role in July.
