Jenny Meadows broke the national record on her way to second spot

Jenny Meadows was pipped in the final straight of the 800m, taking silver at the World Indoor Championships.

The 28-year-old Meadows, last year's world outdoor bronze medallist, led for much of the four-lap race but was outsprinted by Russian Mariya Savinova.

It was Britain's third medal in Doha after golds for pentathlete Jessica Ennis and sprinter Dwain Chambers.

Other Brits in action on Sunday include Samson Oni in the high jump and the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams.

Helen Clitheroe was Britain's first athlete in action and finished eighth in a dramatic 1500m final as Ethiopia's Kalkidan Gezahegne, 18, edged out Spaniard Natalia Rodríguez and compatriot Gelete Burka.

Veteran Joice Maduaka was unable to progress from the 60m semi-finals after a fifth spot in her heat with a 7.35s. LaVerne Jones-Ferrette was the quickest to qualify for the final in 7.05.
