Aussie keeper Jones returns home

Australia do not expect Brad Jones to return to the World Cup finals after the Middlesbrough goalkeeper went home to deal with a serious family illness.

"We decided to let him go to his family and let him stay there as long as he likes," said caoch Pim Verbeek. "We expect him not to come back."

The reserve stopper was granted leave on Saturday and Verbeek has sought permission to name a replacement.

Eugene Galekovic could get the nod if Fifa accepts the Australians' request.

The Adelaide United keeper has been training in South Africa despite not being part of the official squad.

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill said the whole squad had been affected by the news of Jones' exit.

"It hit all the boys for six, as we say in Australia, it took us all back," said the Galatasaray defender.

Dutchman Verbeek, meanwhile, revealed that Everton midfielder Tim Cahill will return to training on Monday after getting the all-clear on the neck injury he suffered in Saturday's 3-1 warm-up defeat by the United States.

The Aussies begin their Group D campaign against Germany on 13 June before games against Ghana (19 June) and Serbia (23 June).
