Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is out for three weeks because of an Achilles tendon injury.

The 29-year-old started the Community Shield win over Chelsea but has made just one substitute appearance for United in their three league games.

"He should be out for three weeks, maybe a month at most," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"It has been bothering him for a few weeks, so we sent him to a specialist in London and he had an injection."

He added: "We are hoping that settles it down.

"We have been considering what we should do about it. The best thing is to get it treated and out of the road now because everyone in the squad is fit."

Carrick was in the England squad for the recent Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland but did not figure in either match.

He is now expected to miss the Premier League games against Everton and Liverpool as well as the Champions League group game against Rangers.
