2B Polanco's errorless streak granted new life

The official scorer who charged Detroit's Placido Polanco with an error in the first inning Friday of the Tigers' 9-6, 11-inning victory over the Yankees has changed the call, giving new life to the record errorless streak for a second baseman, which stood at 148 games entering Saturday night.

Several Detroit-area media outlets reported Saturday that official scorer Ron Kleinfelter changed the call after meeting with the umpire crew, charging the error to Tigers first baseman Marcus Thames.

Polanco's throw to first base was wide and low after cleanly fielding a groundball off the bat of center fielder Melky Cabrera.

Polanco's streak dates to July 1, 2006.

Luis Castillo holds the second-longest mark for second basemen with 143 errorless games from May 30, 2006, to June 5, 2007, set while playing for the Minnesota Twins. Steve Garvey owns the big-league record for consecutive errorless games by an infielder at 193, set from 1983-85.
