Cavendish claims record Tour win

Cavendish beat Hushovd in a sprint finish to claim his ninth Tour stage win

Mark Cavendish produced a stunning sprint finish to claim a fifth stage win of the 2009 Tour and a British record ninth in total.

Cavendish overtook Barry Hoban's record, adding his fifth win to the four victories he claimed last year.

Norway's Thor Hushovd was second and retained the sprinter's green jersey while German Gerald Ciolek was third.

Britain's podium hopeful Bradley Wiggins lost four seconds to rival Lance Armstrong during the 19th stage.

Armstrong, third in the General Classification, extended his lead to 15 seconds over fourth-placed Wiggins.

Spain's Alberto Contador retained the leader's yellow jersey after the stage from Bourgoin Jallieu to Aubenas.

"I gave it everything for the line," said Cavendish.

"I'm so happy, it was amazing. If this stage was in the first week I'd see it as a sprint finish but I'm a bit tired. It was one long line up that climb."

On Saturday the Tour moves to the fearsome Mont Ventoux for the 20th stage when the riders with aspirations of a podium place will have their last realistic chance to claim a position in the top three.
