Jean de Villiers is set to continue his career with Munster

Munster have announced the signing of South African centre Jean de Villiers.

The 28-year-old will join the Irish province at the conclusion of South Africa's involvement in the Tri-Nations competition after agreeing terms.

It only remains for de Villiers' provincial side Western Province to agree to the player's request for an early release from his contract.

The 2008 South Africa Player of the Year is expected to be registered ahead of the ERC registration date.

The deadline for players to be registered to play in the Heineken Cup is 17 September.

His contract with Western Province was scheduled to run until 31 October.

De Villiers has won 46 caps for the Springboks, scoring 85 points.

He started his career on the wing before moving to centre but missed the 2003 Rugby World Cup through injury and had to come home early from the 2007 World Cup to undergo surgery.

He played in the South Africa team which defeated the Lions in the first two Tests this summer.

Munster will hope to recapture the Heineken Cup next season after losing to Irish provincial rivals Leinster at the semi-final stage of this year's tournament.
